A chef finishing a plated steak with sauce, tableside, in a dim, candlelit dining room

West Village, New York

Dinner, by Firelight

Live-fire cooking, an intimate room, and a menu that changes with the season.

Warm, ambient dining room with low light and intimate seating

The Experience

An evening that unhurries you.

The room is small on purpose. Sixteen tables, a hearth at the center, and a kitchen that cooks almost everything over live oak and applewood — the way it was done before ovens made it easy to forget fire.

The menu turns with the market, not the calendar. What you eat in March will be gone by June. What stays constant is the room: low light, close tables, the smell of woodsmoke drifting in from the pass. It is a place built for a long dinner, not a quick one.

The Chef

Adaeze Obi

Chef Obi grew up cooking over a backyard drum grill in Houston, long before she knew it counted as technique. She staged in Lyon, ran the fire station at two Michelin-starred kitchens in Manhattan, and spent a decade quietly convinced that the best meal she'd ever eaten was still the one cooked over coals in her grandmother's yard. Maison Ember is her answer to that memory — a room where the fire is the point, not the plating.

"I don't want the food to look composed. I want it to look like someone who loves you made it, and then plated it beautifully by accident."
