Sable Ridge Safari Lodge · Maasai Mara, Kenya

The Mara, at
its golden hour.

Twelve tented suites on a private conservancy. A small open vehicle, a guide who is only yours, and long stretches of the plain with no one else in it.

The Lodge

Twelve tents. One long view.

Sable Ridge sits on a private conservancy along the northern edge of the Maasai Mara. The land is leased, limited and quiet. When something wonderful walks out of the grass, there are rarely more than a couple of vehicles to share it with, and one of them is yours.

Choosing a camp is the hard part, and we would rather you choose well than choose fast. So we keep the camp small, the days unscheduled, and the answers honest: which month suits you, how you get here, and what it will actually cost.

  • 01

    A private conservancy

Fewer vehicles at every sighting, and room to stay as long as the animals do.

  • 02

A guide who is only yours

Every drive is in a small open vehicle with a private guide, never a shared truck.

  • 03

    Maasai-guided walks

Slow mornings on foot with people who have read this land since childhood.

  • 04

    A solar-powered camp

Silent, low-lit and light on the land, so the night stays properly dark.

Fewer vehicles.
Longer sightings.

On a private conservancy, the plain is not a queue.

  1. Elephants moving between trees on the savanna at first light

    05:45

    Dawn drive

Tea is brought to the porch in the half-dark. By the time the engine starts, the sky has turned the colour of the inside of a shell. Your guide drives slowly, stops often, and cuts the engine when it matters. The conservancy is still, and the animals are only just waking.

  2. Open grassland with a lone acacia tree in soft morning light

    08:30

    Bush breakfast

A table laid beneath an acacia, a fire already going, eggs to order and coffee that tastes better for the setting. Nobody rushes. Your guide tells the stories that never make it into a guidebook, and the plain carries on around you.

  3. A canvas safari tent with a shaded porch set among trees

    12:00

    The slow hours

The middle of the day belongs to shade. A treatment in the quiet spa tent at the edge of camp, or on your own deck if you prefer. A long lunch, a cold towel, a book you will not finish. Even the animals are resting, so you are not missing anything.

  4. An acacia silhouetted against a glowing copper sky at sunset

    17:45

    Sundowner

Your guide chooses a rise with a view, and a drink appears in your hand as the light turns from gold to copper. There is no schedule for this hour, only the wide sky, the sound of the plain settling, and the moment the sun goes.

  5. The silhouette of an animal on a fence against a darkening dusk sky

    20:30

    Stargazing

Because the camp runs on the sun and keeps its lights low, the night sky here is not a feature, it is simply what is above you. Wrap up in a blanket by the fire while your guide names what you are looking at. Then a hot-water bottle finds its way into your bed.

A Day at Sable Ridge

Suites

Canvas, timber, and a deck to yourself.

Twelve suites, spaced well apart along the ridge. Each is a proper room in a tent: real beds, hot water, a deck that faces the plain. Choose the one that suits who is coming.

For two, and the long view

The Acacia Suite

Our classic tent, raised on a timber deck beneath its own acacia. A king or twin bed dressed in linen, a copper bath, and a daybed on the deck for the hour after lunch when nobody wants to go anywhere.

  • King or twin beds
  • Private deck with daybed
  • Indoor bath and outdoor shower
  • Solar-lit, silent at night

Conservation & community

The land comes first. We are guests on it.

The conservancy is held in partnership with the Maasai families who have grazed and guarded this country for generations. Limited beds and limited vehicles are not a marketing line here. They are the whole arrangement.

Shared land, shared benefit

Guest fees are paid into the land, so the families who steward it have every reason to keep it wild. Many of our guides, trackers and walking hosts come from those same families.

Light on the ground

The camp runs on solar power and keeps its footprint small. Tents can be lifted away, water is treated with care, and the night sky stays dark enough to read.

Walk with a Maasai guide

Guided walks are led by Maasai hosts at a slow, quiet pace: tracks, plants, dung, birdsong. It is a different way to see the same country.

Guest words

What people remember.

Our guide turned the engine off and let us listen. We had the lions to ourselves for what felt like an hour and never once looked at a watch.

AmaraLagos

Three generations, one vehicle, and nobody asked to go back early. My father still talks about the breakfast under the tree.

DanielToronto

I arrived to photograph and left with fewer pictures and a better feeling for the place. The light along that ridge is quite unreasonable.
