7 Google Business Profile mistakes costing you local customers
Your Google Business Profile is often the first — and sometimes only — thing a potential customer looks at before deciding to call. These are the mistakes we see most often when we take over a new account, and they're all fixable in a single afternoon.
1. Incomplete or incorrect categories
Choosing only one broad category, or the wrong one entirely, limits which searches you show up for. Most businesses qualify for a primary category plus several relevant secondary categories.
2. Outdated hours
Nothing loses a customer faster than showing up as "closed" when you're actually open, or vice versa — especially around holidays, when hours change and profiles don't get updated.
3. No recent photos
Profiles with stale or no photos read as inactive. Regularly uploaded, real photos of your team, facility, and work signal an active, trustworthy business.
4. Ignoring reviews — good and bad
Responding to reviews, especially negative ones, shows prospective customers how you handle problems. An unanswered bad review sits there indefinitely; a thoughtful response often reads better than a five-star review with no engagement.
5. Missing or generic service descriptions
Vague descriptions ("we do quality work") don't help you rank for anything specific. Detailed, service-specific descriptions help both search ranking and the customer deciding whether you do what they need.
6. Ignoring the Q&A section
Anyone can post a question — or a wrong answer — to your profile's public Q&A. Left unmonitored, incorrect information can sit there and mislead customers indefinitely.
7. No consistent posting
Business Profile posts (offers, updates, new services) are an underused feature that signals activity and can highlight timely promotions directly in search results.
Fixing all seven is usually a few hours of work, followed by ongoing maintenance. If your profile hasn't been touched in a while, it's worth the audit — see our Business Profile management service for how we handle it on an ongoing basis.
